3rd Annual Liam’s Legacy Bike & Trike-A-Thon for Autism

JUNE 19, 2010

Liam’s Legacy was inspired by Liam Bradley, who passed away suddenly and tragically of a seizure.  He was 12 years old and was diagnosed with autism.  Although he had few words his life had a powerful impact on those who knew and loved him.

With our family and friends, we started a non-profit to support individuals with developmental disabilities.  The vision of our organization is to give grants to individuals and organizations that support recreational activities, communication opportunities and improve the quality of life of our community.

On 2008, we held our first fundraisers.  A dance was held at William H. Ross School in Margate, NJ.  T-shirts were sold and our organization was born.  In June 2008, our first Liam’s Legacy kids Bike and Trike-a-thon was held.  We did laps around Shepherd Drive.  With the DJ Ralph, the hotdogs, popcorn and water ice, we had the feel of a great block party.  Every cyclist was awarded a medal and there were prizes for our top cyclists.  It was a great opportunity for kids to be involved in a philanthropic, fun activity.

This year’s Bike and Trike-a- thon will be held June 19, 2010 on Shepherd Drive in Northfield, NJ.  We hope you will join us for fun, fitness and philanthropy.

We awarded have a total of 5 grants to two great organizations .  The first was Hoops for All!   It is a five week basketball program for students with Special Needs in the South Jersey area.  Players receive t-shirts, instruction, one on one support, if necessary, snacks, trophies, pictures and a DVD of the season.  It ends with a party celebrating their participation.  There is no cost to the players or their families.  Parents, relatives and friends enjoy watching their special child, playing, laughing and learning in a non-competitive atmosphere.

The second was to John S. Charlton School in Dover, Delaware. It was the school Liam last attended.  They recently developed a therapeutic riding program for students with special needs.  This allowed students to ride at the Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center at C-Line Stables in Townsend, Delaware.  This is  where Liam rode for several years. Our grant covered the costs for a child to ride.

These donations were made possible by the generosity of our friends,  family and communities.
